For a long time, my mind was anxious to have tour at somewhere. I have a traveling mind. There was a time when this mind was traveling from one side to another side of Bangladesh. But this is an irony of fate that the tour seemed to be lost from my life. For the last 3 years I have not visited anywhere except Bhola and Dhaka. And so whenever I hear of traveling to a beautiful place nearby; I can’t reject that anymore.

My wife has been telling me for the last few days that there is a place near our house to see beautiful kans grass. I was surprised to hear about that beautiful place. I asked, where? She spoked about Bashundhara residential area. I asked if it is beautiful than Diabari? She said, yes! Not less than Diabari.

Whatever you think, that work! On October 17, 2020, I, my wife, my boy Dulquer, and mother-in-law went to visit the beautiful kans grass place in Bashundhara. At 4:10 we left for our travel destination. We took my mother-in-law with me in the middle of the road. Since Bashundhara is not far from my house, I easily reached with a rickshaw fare of only 15 Taka.
Before we get into the details of my travels, let us know something about kans grass:

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF KANS GRASS: Kans grass is a grass native to the Indian Subcontinent. Saccharum spontaneum is it’s binomial name. It is very beautiful to see the flowering white forest on the banks of the river. Its aborigines are Romania. It grows in almost all countries of South Asia like India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. Kans grass is basically a type of grass belonging to the genus Chhan. Kans grass grow on river banks, wetlands, pastures, dry rough areas, hills or any high places in villages. However, they can be seen growing more on the banks of the river. This is because there is a layer of silt on the banks of the river and the roots of kans grass can easily expand in this soil. It is a perennial grass. It grows up to three meters in height with spreading rhizomatous roots. Kans grass grows in the silt plain very quickly due to the monsoon floods that occur every year. Kans grass grow almost very nicely in the lower part of the floodplain. Kans grasslands are an important habitat for the Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis). In Nepal, kans grass is harvested to thatch roofs or fence vegetable gardens. It has a great ability to colonize very quickly. For this feature, it has become an invasive species that takes over croplands and pasturelands.
WHEN KANS GRASS GROWS: In autumn, Kans Grass bloom in white. Kans Grass can be seen in all parts of Bangladesh. Kans Grass are soft like feathers and the color is pale white. The evergreen leaves of the tree are very sharp on both sides.
USES OF KANS GRASS: Kans grass has several medicinal properties. It is used in Ayurveda. If anyone have gallstones in the gallbladder, gallstones can be removed by regularly making medicines with the roots and other ingredients of the plant. Regular application of this plant on the body removes body odor. Kans Grass is also used in the treatment of body painkillers.

KANS GRASS IN LITERATURE: Kans grass has been mentioned in literature in many ways. Rabindranath has composed the dance drama ‘Shapmochan’ based on the story of the ancient book ‘Kushjatak’. Kans grass removes the blackness of the mind. Whiteness removes fear and carries the message of peace. Kans grass or flowers are used for good deeds.

OTHER INORMATION ABOUT KANS GRASS: Kans grass has been present in Bangladesh and its adjoining areas since prehistoric times. Another species of Kans grass is called Kush. They look almost like Kans grass. The place of Kush is very high in the holy scripture ‘Purana’ of the followers of SANATAN religion. Kans grass can be planted in the village house or on the bank of the pond if desired. However, in that case you have to choose a place that is a little cold and mixed with sand.
The beauty of the Kans grass made me so amazed. After a beautiful kans grass tour at Bashundhara residential area for about an hour, we left for home. My son Dulquer was very tired on the way. And so he kept looking at us. In our opinion, My son also likes to travel like us. And so he doesn’t cry when he’s in tour with us, even though he’s tired. That’s how my day trip to kans grass ended.
