How the name of Barguna derives: Although no precise information is available on the history of the name Barguna, it is known that the place was known as BARA GONA because the timber traders of North Bengal used to come to this region to fetch timber and cross the fast flowing Khakdon river for favorable flow or BIG GON.

According to some, the place was called Barguna because the boat had to be crossed by pulling a rope (GUNA) against the current.

Some say that Barguna is named after a powerful Rakhine resident named Barguna. On the contrary, according to some, the place was named Barguna after a Bawali named Barguna.

3. 22% of Barguna is river area: The total area of the river is 160 square kilometer which is 22% of the total area of the district. Moreover, there are 300 natural canals in the district.

4. Area of Barguna: Barguna covers an area of 1939.39sq km which is the 35th district in Bangladesh in area. If it were a country it would be 169th in size. Which means there are 25 independent countries in the world whose size is less than Barguna.

5. Population of Barguna: Barguna has a population of about 0.892 million or 8 lakh 92 thousand which makes Barguna the 7th smallest district in Bangladesh in terms of population. There are 33 independent countries in the world with less population than Barguna. About 460 people live in every square kilometerof Barguna.

6. Male/Female ratio of Barguna: Male/ Female ratio of Barguna is 1:1.04. According to National Census of 2011 there is 437,413 male in comparison to 455,368 female.

7. Barguna was once entirely in Sundarban: The entire territory of this district was one day in the Sundarban area. In the evolution of time, the people started gradually cutting the Sundarbans and started creating populations.

8. Number of Subdistrict, Union and Municipalities: Barguna has 6 Subdistricts, Barguna Sadar, Amtoli, Bamna, Pathargata, Taltoli, Betagi, 4 Municipalities, Barguna Sadar, Amtoli, Pathargata, Betagi and Barguna has 42 Unions.

Important personalities of Barguna: Founder President of Bangladesh Cancer Society, eminent educationist Professor Syed Fazlul Haque (born 1920-died 2005) and Shahjada Abdul Malek Khan (born 1925-died 2007) who played a special role in the OSOHOJOG ANDOLON in Bangladesh before the war of independence were born in Barguna district.

10. Popular Foods of Barguna: Barguna district is famous for coconuts and betel nuts. There are also famous food of Barguna – Chuia pitha, Chaba pitha, Muitta pitha, Allan, Biscui, Palm jam, Shirni, Narikeler Suruya, Rice bread, fish, sweets.
