Poet Vijayagupta also mentions the fishing community as Jhalo in his poem Manasamangal. According to many, on the west bank of the present Jhalokati, fishermen used to clear the jungle and build houses: Jhalokati is named after the JHELE+KATHI (Fishermen+Stick) = JAHL+ KATHI (Net+Stick). The name of Jhalokati originates from this fishermen and forest stick.
