1. Establishment of Bagerhat:  Bagerhat district was established on 23 February 1984. This Bagerhat district was a thana in 1842 under Khulna subdistrict. Later in 1863, it became a subdistrict (upazila) under Jessore district. Then in 1984 it got his current acquaintance.

2. How the name of Bagerhat derives: Although who gave the name of Bagerhat is subject to research, it is difficult to determine today’s date. According to some, the area was infested with tigers due to the presence of the Sundarbans near Bagerhat, hence the name “Bagherhat” which was gradually changed to Bagerhat.

According to the sect, In “Khalifat-i-Abad” founded by Hazrat Khanjahan (RA), the famous “Bagh” meaning “garden” was so prosperous in this region that name of the region become “Planting of garden” or “Baggerhat”.

However, the most believable view is that the long bend from Harikhali on the north side of the Bhairab River, which flows past the city, to the present Nag Bazar, formerly used to be a haat in the old market area of that bend. And the name of this place was “Bakerhat” (Bendmarket). Over time, “Bakerhat”  has changed to Bagerhat.

3. Non-Aryan people first settled in Bagerhat: Non-Aryan people first settled in Bagerhat. These include the Austrians and Dravidians from the Mediterranean and the Mongolian Alpine. The Paundrakshatriya community is a great example of non-Aryan influence in this region. People of this community live in different places of this district especially in Rampal upazila.

4. Area of Bagerhat: Bagerhat covers an area of 3,959.11 Square km or 1,528.62 Square Mile which is the 6th district in Bangladesh in area. If it were a country it would be 166th in size. Which means there are 28 independent countries in the world whose size is less than Bagerhat.

5.Population of Bagerhat: According to National Census of 2011, Bagerhat has a population of about 1.476 million or 14 lakh 76 thousand 90 which makes Bagerhat the 44th district in Bangladesh in terms of population. There are 44 independent countries in the world with less population than Bagerhat. About 373 people live in every square kilometerof Bagerhat.

6. Male/Female ratio of Bagerhat: Male/ Female ratio of Bagerhat is 1.005:1. According to National Census of 2011 there is 740,138 male in comparison to 735,952 female.

7. Previous Name of Bagerhat: Bagerhat is a great historical place. Bagerhat city is famous for its mosques. Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali founded this town. He was a great saint of the fifteen century. At the time of his reign, Bagerhat was a part of the Sunderban forest. He cleared the forest and made it habitable. He named it Khalifabad.

Important personalities of Bagerhat: Prominent personalities including Educator, writer and social worker Dr. Neelima Ibrahim (1921-2002) Poet of Green land, Poet of humanity, Matiur Rahman Mallick (1954-2010), poet and lyricist Rudra Muhammad Shahidullah (1956-1991), Bir Uttam Liaquat Ali Khan, Bir Pratik Mohammad Hossain (1930-2007) were born in Bagerhat district.

11. Popular Foods of Bagerhat: Bagerhat district is famous for shrimp production. Also some of the popular dishes of Bagerhat are Chuijhal Spices of Chuijhal meat and Semai pitha. In Bagerhat, any guest is served semai pitha instead of biryani or meat.
