মারাকেশ, মরক্কোর মধ্যবর্তী প্রধান শহর। মরক্কোর চারটি সাম্রাজ্যশাসিত শহরের প্রথমটি, এটি উর্বর সেচ কৃষি করা হাওজ প্লেনের মধ্যে, তেন্নসিফ্ট নদীর দক্ষিণে অবস্থিত। শহরের প্রাচীন অংশ, যা মেদিনা হিসাবে পরিচিত, ১৯৮৫ সালে ইউনেস্কোর বিশ্ব ঐতিহ্যবাহী স্থান হিসাবে ঘোষণা করা হয়েছিল।

মারাকেশ আলমোরাবিদ সাম্রাজ্যের সাম্রাজ্যশাসিত শহর হিসেবে ১০৭০ সালে এমির আবু বকর ইবনে উমার দ্বারা প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল। আলমোরাবিদরা শহরে প্রথম বৃহত্তর কাঠামো তৈরি করেছিলেন এবং শতাব্দীগুলি ধরে এর বিন্যাস আকৃতি দিয়েছিলেন। শহরের লাল দেওয়াল, যা ১১২২-১১২৩ সালে আলি ইবনে ইউসুফ দ্বারা নির্মিত হয়েছিল, এবং পরবর্তীতে লাল বালুপাথর দিয়ে নির্মিত বিভিন্ন কাঠামো, শহরকে “লাল শহর” (আলমাদিনাত আলহামরা) বা “ওকার শহর” (ভিল ওকর) নামে পরিচিত করেছে।
মারাকেশ দ্রুত বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছিল এবং একটি সাংস্কৃতিক, ধর্মীয় এবং বাণিজ্যিক কেন্দ্র হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল। তখনকার সাম্রাজ্যের পতনের পরে, শহরটি ফেজ দ্বারা অতিক্রম করা হয়েছিল। পরবর্তীতে মারাকেশ সাদি রাজবংশের রাজধানী হিসেবে পুনরায় প্রধানত্ব অর্জন করেছিল । সুলতান আবদাল্লাহ আল-গালিব এবং আহমদ আল-মানসুর এল বাদি প্রাঙ্গণ (১৫৭৮) এর মতো বিলাসবহুল রাজপ্রাসাদ সজ্জিত করেছিলেন এবং অনেক ধ্বংসাগ্রস্ত স্মারক পুনর্বাসন করেছিলেন। ১৭শ শতাব্দী থেকে শহরটি সুফি তীর্থযাত্রীদের মধ্যে জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠেছিল।
